Cuban Venezuelan medical brigade has given attention to more than 4,000 Haitians Print E-mail
Since January 13, one day after the earthquake devastating Haiti, more than 4,000 patients have been given medical attention by Cuban Venezuelan Brigade Doctors, in the La Renaissance Hospital, in Coirte Street of Port-au-Prince, informed Adriana Pomeda, chief of the Medical Brigade. She affirmed that more than 200 surgical interventions have been undertaken during 32 days.

“The first patients presented orthopedic pathologies; the presented several traumatisms, injuries and squashing. Nowadays, they have been replaced by other pathologies like infections, acute respiratory infections, diarrhea and skin infections, due to the unfavorable hygiene environment,” she explained.

She said that doctors from the surveillance campaign and anti-vectorial struggle joined in the task. They establish settlements around the hospital in order to enhance the hygiene environmental situation, health education, as well as to carry out desterilization treatments.

Also, she remarked the job done by the Mexican doctors, and the Haitians themselves, that have collaborated to the medical assistance given to the people.

Pomeda highlighted that doctors have a great enthusiasm, commitment to the humanitarian and solidarity values, everyone oriented to the same objective, the cure of the Haitian brothers and sisters.

She informed that there are more than 6,000 formal and informal cabins, of families that lost their houses, around the hospital. They have normally use spaces like parks and squares to live temporarily.

“The cabins are distributed in seven settlements lodging more than 38,000 persons,” she said.

“In the hospital we are given good attention by the doctors. If I was not given attention here, I would be already dead,” said a patient.

Venezuelan Humanitarian Task Force has given attention to 8,460 Hatians

From the Disasters Prevention and Assistance Center, at the Venezuelan Embassy in Haiti, the leader of the group, Landy Rodríguez, said that the team has given general health care to 8,460 Hatians.

The center is formed by a multi-disciplinary team, ALBA allies, members of the Batallion 51 (Venezuelan doctors), Venezuelas Protección Civil, Misión Rivas and the Ministry of Peoples Power for Agriculture and Landing, among other institutions.

Rodríguez pointed out that the attention to the 8,460 cases has been given in 60,000 man-hours.”

4,000 tons of food sent from Venezuela have been distributed in the lodges installed by the Bolivarian Governmet.

By orders of President Chávez three camps of holistic assistance have been installed so far, one in Jacmel, called Francisco de Miranda, and two more in Leogane, called Simón Bolívar and Alejandro Pétion.

“This week we foresee to deploy another camp. We are evaluating possible damages and risks in order not to install a camp that would mean a problem for the Haitians,” stated Rodríguez as he informed that a new group of 250 people from the the countries of ALBA will soon arrive.
